The Importance of Computer Education For Teachers

March 10th, 2010 by fabula

The world of today is run by computers and it is time that teachers understand this. The idea of going to a library and reading a book is not ideal to the students of today. Students would rather go online and read into a subject on a webpage rather than go and have to read an entire book or have to skim for the part they are looking for. So, if your a teacher what are you to do? Computer education for teachers is what every school needs to do.

Teachers, and for that matter all school districts, need to begin to integrate technology into all classrooms and this article will tell you how.

Computer education for teachers should not be that big of a deal because all teachers who have just began probably already know how to integrate technology into the classrooms, so you should only have to teach those who have been teaching for awhile.

How do you integrate technology into your classrooms though? That is the question all teachers are asking and here is the answer. Research is the number one thing students use the internet for. Many school libraries and even some public libraries do not provide students with the information they need on certain topics but the internet will almost always have the information they need. The only problem with this is the quality of the information but teachers are able to check on that by looking at the foot notes of the article to see where the information came from.

Many schools are now having students take tests on a sheet called a Scantron or other forms of it. A Scantron is a sheet where you have 50 questions on each side, a total of 100 questions, and are given multiple choice questions A-E. The teacher will hand you a Scantron which is where you answer the questions and a test sheet, the Scantron is only a sheet where you bubble in either A-E. The teacher then puts the answers in a computer and a special machine reads the Scantron and automatically grades the test off of the answers the teacher put into the computer.

Besides research and test taking there are many other ways to integrate computers into your teaching. There are now projection screens that allow you to write on them turning them basically into a white board. You are able to watch movies on the white board, stop the movie, and draw over the movie. This is very helpful for History teachers as it allows them to teach the battles and etc.

Bureaucracy in Education

March 10th, 2010 by fabula

Last night, while attending a high school graduation, I saw something that must surely exemplify one of the major problems in public education. An administrator followed protocol with no adaptation for individual settings. This mantra is precisely why our public education system is struggling so hard to meet the needs of our children today.

The situation was this: as typical in most graduations, a line of students waited to receive their diplomas (or mock-diplomas). The student’s name was called, the family cheered, and then the student walked over, shook hands with the principal, hugged or shook hands with another teacher/administrator or two, then paused to have their picture taken. The system seemed perfect at first; the names were read quickly and in most cases clearly, and the students proceeded rapidly through the gauntlet of adults. The problem came, however, when the reached the photographer. Each student had to stand, smile, and wait for the fateful click. This took longer than it took to read each name, and so a line formed very quickly between the name-reading and the photo-snapping. Yet the despite the fact that several folks were cycled in to read names, none corrected for this problem, and so the bottleneck grew. Finally, a reader would stop calling names, and everyone would wait for a few minutes as the bottleneck dispersed. Thus, each reader followed the exact procedure given to them.

But how difficult would it be to make an adjustment? Rather than spitting out the names rapidly (and glaring at families who dared cheer longer than .05 seconds), the reader would have read-and-paused, read-and-paused. Not only would the bottleneck have never been created, parents would also be able to cheer a bit without drowning out the next student’s name. And we wouldn’t have had twenty kids milling around, waiting for their photo (and you should have seen what happened when the photographer needed new film!)

As I said, this problem is indicitive of the public education system today. While there are some excellent educators in the field today – and I have been fortunate enough to have been in several of those classrooms – there are also some who follow the line exactly and refuse to adjust despite the needs of the individual children. They refuse to adjust, to make changes, or to think for themselves. Others might be more like the group of administrators who sat behind the reader and just be too lazy (or frightened of change?) to make the suggestion.

Let me say again – there are many excellent teachers out there who sincerely care about their students and who are willing to change things up to benefit the members of their classroom. But there are also many who fall into the system and let it engulf their entire way of teaching, who refuse to adapt and adjust. The bottlenecks these people create will result in far worse than long silences at graduation.

They will result in silences in the minds of the graduates.

Educational Benefits of Online Rebus Puzzles

March 9th, 2010 by fabula

Rebus puzzles are word puzzles that use strategically placed letters or words to represent a common phrase, saying, or word. They are a popular type of puzzle for both children and adults and can be very fun and educational at the same time. There are a few basic types of rebus puzzles that employ different types of designs that you must look at in order to solve the puzzle. Each type of puzzle has different educational benefits as well.

One of the most common types of online rebus puzzles is one that uses word positions to create another word or phrase. A puzzle that contains the word “man” placed inside the word “moon” creates the phrase “man in the moon because of the way the words are positioned. This type of rebus puzzle helps develop early reading skills by helping children to differentiate between and identify different words.

Some rebus puzzles will use word repetition and highlighting to lead the viewer to solve the puzzle. A puzzle with the word “base” written three times in a row with an arrow pointing to the first base would denote the phrase “first base.” This type of puzzle introduces the early learning concept of reading text in a certain order, either left to right or top to bottom as text is usually written in this way.

Sometimes an online rebus puzzle does not follow the traditional left to right or top to bottom pattern, rather it uses direction as a clue to the solution. The word “break” written with the letters from bottom to top would be solved as breakup. This type of rebus puzzle encourages creativity in early education and gives children the opportunity to look at words and letters in a different way.

An online rebus puzzle can also use size as an indicator of the solution. Very large or small words or letters are usually part of the solution. The word “fry” written in very small text would represent the phrase “small fry.” Rebus puzzles that use size to represent a solution also foster creativity in early education and are a way to introduce children to new ways of thinking about language.

Rebus puzzles can also use repetition as a way to represent a word or phrase. Puzzles that repeat a letter or word a certain number of times may allude to a word or phrase that includes a word that sounds like a number such as to (two) or for (four). The word “sight” repeated four times will represent the word “foresight.” This type of online rebus puzzle is valuable in early education because it helps children to make connections between numbers and words and to think of language in an abstract way.

There are many online rebus puzzles for you to enjoy, or if you need something more personalized you can always use an online rebus puzzle maker to create personalized rebus puzzles that are suitable for all age and ability levels. Rebus puzzle makers can be found online and are a great way to make rebus puzzles that are specialized for your needs as an educator, parent, or just for fun.

Why do bodies beam at creationists? (part 14).

In each case the creationist statements are shown to be outrageously stupid by even the most rudimentary knowledge of science. In this episode it is shown the creationist organization The Discovery Institute and other creationists such as Kent Hovind (the convicted fraudster ‘Dr Dino’) share a common feature of willful dishonesty in that they are happy to misquote famous people to make it sound like they support creationism (quote mining). This dishonesty was particularly obvious in the dover vs kitzmiller trial where it was found that the ID proponents and creationists Bill Buckingham and Alan Bonsell put simply lied their asses off in court to attempt to disguise their true intent of teaching creationism in school. Careers include faculty positions at community colleges, and universities as well as managerial positions in education, training, testing and research. Looking for more specifics, read on!

A Typical Day Practicing Educational Psychology

Upon completion of my graduate degree I took on a position as the director of assessment and accountability in a local school district. My day usually started at 8am in the district office. I was responsible for coordinating all testing conduced by the district. This included all state mandated testing as well as local district level assessments.

To achieve this goal, I meet regularly with testing coordinators from each school, individuals responsible for making sure all testing ran smoothly at the school level. I would help them in their organization for testing, encourage discussion between schools and answer any questions from teachers, parents or students regarding testing procedures.

Additionally, I was responsible for all testing data analysis. This meant communicating testing results to students, parents, teachers and administrators. During the course of a work day, I would meet with many different parties.

I would meet with parents to talk about their student achievement concerns and to help them devise a study plan by identifying student weaknesses and areas in need of improvement. I would meet with teachers to talk about classroom instruction and areas for improvement. I would meet with school administrators to evaluate school performance, evaluate current curriculum and improve instruction.

Defining a typical day in the life of an educational psychologist is almost impossible. This degree allows for so many career options and each brings with it a vast array of tasks and projects. If you enjoy focusing on student achievement and like working with people, you should consider an education psychology program.

Where do I start?

Enrolling in a two year online master’s degree educational psychology program is the quickest way to become an educational psychologist. This type of program will introduce you to concepts such as research methodology, human learning, development, motivation and cognition.

Education is the Key to Your Success

March 6th, 2010 by fabula

No matter what path you take in life there is always the necessity for the life sustaining component of an education. Education comes in many forms drilled down to two distinct types; the formal and the informal.

There is no point in getting out of bed in the morning if you don’t learn something, no matter how old or how young, every single waking hour of our lives we are learning.

Never fool yourself that there is no possibility for an education when it is economically just not a viable option for you. There is a never ending supply of ways for you to create a formal education. Libraries are free and plentiful and a wonderful source of information. Join a library and search out information in reference to your subject of interest. Librarians are always willing to assist you if the whole area seems too daunting, many successful people in this world have no formal education, but armed with the personal desire to be successful and the will to win they have educated themselves to a level of expertise and success in many fields which they are able to select. During even the earliest years of our lives education and sustenance are the keys to our survival.

Numbers of the ‘lucky’ members of our society spend many years going through the formal educative processes, schooling us in all forms of communication. Speech, reading, writing, all sciences in their own area of expertise, why is it that we reach a stage in our lives when we are apt to process some thoughts which are so completely negative, when in this age of knowledge the ability to acquire information is endless.

Personally I am of the opinion that it is never too late to learn and many life changing educative processes can begin at any age. It is a well known fact that there are a number of the so called privileged members of our society who have not been the recipients of a well paid formal education, but yet are listed among the most successful members of our so called civilized society. These people saw the opportunity of making the most of their lives and used every moment for the ‘education‘ of themselves and now they are the employers of a very high percentage of our society and also employ many of the educated members of this world.

Never let an opportunity pass you by, make every post a winner, use every waking moment of every day and take your own life in your hands and educate yourself in some way each day. You should never let the sun set on a day when there has been nothing learned as each evening brings the end of a day never again to be lived.

Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself

Pros and Cons of Online Education – 5 Things You Need to Know

March 5th, 2010 by fabula

Of course there are pros and cons to earning your college degree online. It is important for you to know what that means to you. This article will cover several of those points. If it appears that online education is right for you there are many websites that will help you find the online college degree education program that is the best for you.

Accreditation: Not all schools are created equal. Make sure that the online college you are considering has the appropriate accreditation. Find out what accreditation is required for the particular career you are seeking. This will vary amongst occupations and professions. (of course this is true of traditional campus based schools as well)Financial aid: Recently legislation was passed that forbid the withholding of financial aid to a student at an online school based on that fact alone. However, this may still be an issue. Learning style: Online education is not for everyone. Some people are more social and less technologically inclined and find that a campus based school meets their abilities and personalities better. If you are self-driven, have a basic knowledge of computers, and do not need a campus to meet your social needs, then online education may be better for your style.Transferability: If you start an online program and then decide to transfer to another campus-based college, you will want to make sure your online credits will transfer. This is a question you need to ask the advisor before you select a school. On the other hand, choosing an online school will allow you to continue your education program even if you have to move, change jobs, or undergo some other new obligation. Creditability: Despite the fact that online degrees are increasing by 20% each year, as opposed to campus-based colleges which are increasing only 2% each year, some potential employers may not give an online degree the came credibility as a traditional campus based college degree. You need to do your homework here too. Ask potential employers what the general feeling is about online degrees, this can vary greatly related to occupation and the level of the degree you are seeking. Earning a college degree takes planning and perseverance. You need to make sure that you do your “homework” and select the program and the method of education that will best suit you and give you the “bank for your buck”. Make sure you ask the right questions of both campus-based traditional college education programs and online or distance college degree education programs. Talk to the advisor at whichever type of school you choose and make sure you understand the pros and cons.
